1. Giving a project update

Verbose speaking

Yesterday, I worked on the dashboard screens, and then I connected them to the reporting API. After that, I went through the acceptance checks. There are twenty checks in total, and eighteen are passing. The two remaining ones are about the empty state and the export button. I plan to finish those today. So, overall, the dashboard is still on track for Friday.

Minto speaking

Conclusion: The dashboard is on track for Friday.

Key arguments: The main screens and API integration are complete. Only two acceptance checks remain.

Details: Eighteen of twenty checks are passing. I plan to finish the empty-state and export-button checks today.

2. Recommending a release delay

Verbose speaking

I was testing the payment flow, and most of it looked fine. Then I tried a few timeout scenarios because I wanted to check what happens when the provider takes too long to respond. In two out of fifty retry tests, the same payment was charged twice. I need one working day to fix it and another for regression testing. The release is scheduled for Friday, so I think moving it to Tuesday would be safer.

Minto speaking

Conclusion: I recommend moving the release from Friday to Tuesday.

Key arguments: The payment retry flow can charge a customer twice. I need two working days to fix it and complete regression testing.

Details: Duplicate charges occurred in two of fifty timeout-and-retry tests. The revised date allows one day for the fix and one for regression testing.

3. Proposing a technical solution

Verbose speaking

I looked into the slow search endpoint. At first, I thought the server might need more capacity, so I checked the CPU metrics, but CPU usage stayed below forty percent. Then I looked at the database query and noticed that it was scanning the orders table. I tried adding an index in staging, and with the same dataset of a hundred thousand orders, response time went from 2.4 seconds to 180 milliseconds. So I would try the index before upgrading the server.

Minto speaking

Conclusion: I recommend adding the index before upgrading the server.

Key arguments: The query is scanning the orders table, while CPU usage is below forty percent. Adding the index made the endpoint much faster in staging.

Details: On the same dataset of a hundred thousand orders, response time dropped from 2.4 seconds to 180 milliseconds.

4. Asking for budget approval

Verbose speaking

I’ve been looking at how much time I spend preparing the weekly report. There are several spreadsheets, and I have to copy the numbers, check the formulas, and format everything. I tried a reporting tool for four weeks. Before the trial, the report took eight hours a week, and during the trial it took two. I also checked the totals against the manual reports, and they matched in all four weeks. The annual subscription is twelve hundred dollars, so I’d like approval to purchase it.

Minto speaking

Conclusion: Please approve a $1,200 annual subscription to the reporting tool.

Key arguments: It saves me six hours a week, and the report totals matched the manual reports throughout the trial.

Details: Over four weeks, weekly reporting time dropped from eight hours to two. The totals matched in all four comparisons.

5. Sharing research findings

Verbose speaking

I finished the onboarding study with fifteen participants. I asked them to go through the current signup form and explain what they were thinking. There are eight required fields. Ten participants got stuck on company details they didn’t have available. I then tested a version with three required fields and the company details moved to a later step. Twelve participants completed that version without help, compared with six on the current form. Based on that, I think a larger test of the shorter form would be useful.

Minto speaking

Conclusion: I recommend a larger test of the three-field signup form, with company details collected later.

Key arguments: Unavailable company details were a common blocker, and more participants completed the shorter form without help.

Details: Ten of fifteen participants got stuck on company details. Twelve completed the shorter form independently, compared with six on the current eight-field form.
