Bạn: Yes, later. I’d like a little time first. Watching it together won’t quite replace having you there.

Bạn thân: Of course. Next time I’ll confirm the date instead of trusting what I remember.

Bạn: That would help. I don’t want to keep arguing about it, but I did need you to understand why it mattered.

Bạn: We’re having a small evening at my place on Saturday. Would you like to join us? Everyone’s bringing a clip they remember from childhood.

Bạn: That sounds good. I’ll come. But are you inviting me to listen, or to play? I only know three chords.

Bạn thân: To listen. Bring your guitar if you want, but nobody’s going to put your name on the list without asking.

Bạn: Great. I’d like to hear what the evening is like first. What time should we meet?

Bạn thân: Six thirty outside the café. We can get food before the music starts.

Bạn: Perfect. I’ll meet you there at six thirty. I’ll leave the guitar at home this time and just enjoy the evening.

Bạn: Thanks for staying with me last night. I don’t think I said it properly when we left the hospital.

Bạn thân: You didn’t need to. How’s your dad today?

Bạn: He’s resting. The doctors are still checking a few things. Having you there made the waiting easier.

Bạn thân: I’m glad I could be there. I wasn’t sure whether you wanted to talk or just have company.

Bạn: The company was enough. You didn’t keep asking me to be positive, and I appreciated that.

Bạn thân: You can call again if you need to. You don’t have to have an update or know what to say first.

Bạn: Thanks for adding those subtitles. Grandpa laughed at the joke before Mum had to explain it to him.

Bạn thân: Really? I was worried the text would take up too much of the screen.

Bạn: It was easy to read. I think it made a real difference, especially when several people were speaking at once.

Bạn thân: I’m glad. Checking the timing took longer than I expected.

Bạn: I noticed. You even included the words that were hard to hear. I’d like to use your version at the next family gathering.

Bạn thân: Of course. I’ll send you the final file so you don’t have to play it from the chat preview.

Bạn: You got your first salary! Congratulations, Mum. How does it feel to see it in your account?

Mẹ: Strange, honestly. It isn’t a huge amount, but I keep opening the app to check it’s there.

Bạn: I think you should celebrate it. You worked hard to learn everything and get through that first month.

Mẹ: I was so nervous on my first day. I nearly called you to say I couldn’t do it.

Mẹ: I’d love that. But let me buy dessert. I’ve been waiting a long time to say that with my own pay.

Bạn: That sounds really disappointing. You’ve been looking forward to this for months.

Bạn thân: I know it isn’t anyone’s fault. I’m just upset that everyone will be together and I won’t be there.

Bạn: Of course you are. Have you been able to talk to your family yet?

Bạn thân: Briefly. Mum said it was fine, which somehow made me feel worse.

Bạn: I can stay for a while if you’d like some company. We don’t have to spend the whole evening searching for tickets.

Bạn thân: I’d like that. I might look again later. Right now, I just don’t want to sit here alone with my packed bag.

Bạn: I’m not sure if I’m excited or terrified. We’ve sent plenty of messages, but meeting in person feels completely different.

Bạn thân: What are you most worried about?

Bạn: That she’ll expect us to feel like family immediately. I need time to get to know someone, even if we’re related.

Bạn thân: Have you told her that? She might be feeling the same pressure.

Bạn: Not yet. I’ve been trying to sound more confident than I feel.

Bạn thân: You could say you’re glad you’re meeting and a little nervous. That doesn’t make the meeting less important.

Bạn thân: I can’t remember the first line. I knew it ten minutes ago, and now there’s nothing.

Bạn: I can go through the opening with you. We still have five minutes. You don’t need to remember the whole song at once.

Bạn thân: What if it happens again when I’m out there?

Bạn: You can pause and start again. I’m not saying you won’t make a mistake. I’m saying a mistake doesn’t have to end the performance.

Bạn thân: Could you stay where I can see you?

Bạn: Of course. I’ll stand near the front. Let’s try the first line together now, slowly.

Bạn thân: Everyone else seems to understand things straight away. Maybe I’ve left it too late to study again.

Bạn: Just because they answer quickly doesn’t mean you can’t learn it. You finished the first assignment, didn’t you?

Bạn thân: Yes, but it took me most of the weekend. They probably did it in an evening.

Bạn: You don’t know that. I think you should ask the teacher about the parts that took longest, not decide from one difficult week.

Bạn thân: I could do that. I kept quiet because I didn’t want to look behind.

Bạn: You don’t need to know everything before asking. I can help you go over the next assignment, if you’d like.

Bạn: I can lend you my jacket if that would help. I noticed the coffee, but please say no if you’d rather not.

Người cùng chờ: I’ll try it. How can I get it back to you afterwards?

Bạn: I’ll be in the café downstairs until noon. If you’re still in the interview, we can arrange another time.

Người cùng chờ: Thank you. I was trying to think about my answers, but all I could think about was this shirt.

Bạn: I was going to look at a flat, but I ended up being mistaken for the landlord.

Bạn thân: How did that happen? Did you arrive carrying a set of keys?

Bạn: No. A woman asked if I was there about the flat. I said yes, and she immediately asked me not to raise the rent.

Bạn thân: How long did you let that continue?

Bạn: About ten seconds. I told her I was looking for somewhere to rent too, not buying the building.

Bạn thân: Was she embarrassed?

Bạn: A little. Then she showed me the broken window she’d been trying to get fixed for months.

Bạn thân: So it turned out you got useful information before the actual viewing. I’d want to know about that window too.

Bạn: The first thing you notice is the old green train carriage. It’s sitting in a garden, with little tables beside the track.

Bạn thân: Can you actually sit inside, or is the carriage just for decoration?

Bạn: You can sit inside. They’ve kept the seats and luggage racks, but put small wooden tables between them.

Bạn thân: Is it noisy when it’s full?

Bạn: It was quiet when I went. I’d like to go back on a weekday, though. The narrow space might feel crowded at weekends.

Bạn thân: What was your favourite part?

Bạn: Sitting by the window with coffee. I think you’d like it, especially if you went early and had that end to yourself.

Bạn thân: That sounds good. Could you send me the location? I’d like to go before it gets busy.

Bạn thân: What do you do on Wednesday evenings? Every time I suggest dinner, you’ve already got plans.

Bạn: I go to a repair group near my flat. I’ve been going for about three months. People bring things they’d otherwise throw away.

Bạn thân: I didn’t know you were good at fixing things.

Bạn: I’m not, yet. I usually help sort things and watch someone with more experience. Last week I learned to fix a loose chair leg.

Bạn thân: Do you always manage to repair what people bring?

Bạn: No. Sometimes we just find out it can’t be fixed there. I like having one evening when I work with my hands, not another screen.

Bạn: I used to think I had to sound confident before sending a voice message. I’d record it twenty times and still send a text.

Bạn thân: What changed? You send voice messages all the time now.

Bạn: It wasn’t until someone replied to my actual question that I realised they weren’t judging my voice. They just wanted to talk.

Bạn thân: Do you still listen to every recording before sending it?

Bạn: Usually once, to check it makes sense. But I don’t keep recording just because I dislike how I sound.

Bạn thân: So you’ve got used to hearing yourself?

Bạn: A little. I still make mistakes, but I can explain myself afterwards. I don’t have to fix everything before the conversation starts.

Bạn thân: That sounds much less tiring. And now I get to hear your news instead of watching the typing symbol disappear.

Bạn: It turned out that the paper inside my second-hand book was my own school essay. I recognised the handwriting before I saw my name.

Bạn thân: Seriously? How did your essay end up in a bookshop?

Bạn: My old teacher’s name was inside the cover. So I contacted her and sent a photo.

Bạn thân: Did she remember it?

Bạn: Yes. It turned out she’d kept it as a bookmark, then forgotten it was there when she donated the book.

Bạn thân: What was the essay about?

Bạn: What I wanted to be when I grew up. Apparently, I had very clear plans to own a restaurant on the moon.

Bạn thân: You should keep it. That’s a much better thing to find than an old shopping receipt.

Bạn: I should have checked that it was recording. I held my phone up for ten minutes and came home with nothing.

Bạn thân: Not even a short clip? Did you press the wrong button?

Bạn: I thought I’d pressed record, but I hadn’t. I ended up watching the whole thing through a screen without saving any of it.

Bạn thân: So are you refusing to record anything now?

Bạn: No. Next time, I’ll check the recording first, take a short clip, then put the phone away and enjoy the rest.

Bạn thân: That seems reasonable. For this event, shall we agree on the one moment we actually want to capture?

Bạn: Yes. I’d rather get that one part right than try to record everything and miss what I came to see.

Bạn thân: Good. I’ll remind you to check the timer, and you can remind me to stop filming afterwards.
